During the Second World War Britainâs heavy reliance on grain imports from Canada and the United States was targeted by the German navy in a sustained and deadly U-boat campaign.
In order to reduce the nationâs dependency on bread as a food staple the Ministry of Food urged the public to increase their consumption of potatoes as an non-rationed starch alternative.
Poster reads: Save bread and you save lives. Serve potatoes and you serve the country
